Fishing Dock and Kayak Launch Installed at Lake at Comanche Trail Park

(BIG SPRING, TEXAS)- Cosden Lake, located at the City of Big Spring’s Comanche Trail Park, now has a fishing dock and kayak launch.
The dock was made possible through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) Habitat and Angler Access Program and a generous donation from the Hayes Stripling, Sr. Memorial Fund through the Big Spring Area Community Foundation. The project was one of 11 projects selected from across the state to receive funding from HAAP.
“HAAP offers TPWD and partners tremendous opportunity to support much-needed fish habitat enhancement initiatives and shoreline-based access developments, improving conservation of fisheries resources and quality of angling for Texans,” said Michael Homer, Habitat and Angler Access Program Coordinator for TPWD.
“This is something we have wanted for the community for quite a while,” said Susan Himes, Director of Community Services. “We know how many people enjoy fishing on Cosden Lake, which we also stock with fish through TPWD. We were very excited when our proposal was chosen by HAAP for a grant this year.”
She said the dock is designed to rise and fall with the changing water levels at the lake year-round. Due to West Texas winds and weather, it has a special anchoring system and is made of durable, weather-resistant materials.
The public is reminded that the dock is subject to the same rules as fishing from shore, as well as all park rules. There is no swimming in the lake, and no boats with motors are allowed on the lake. The kayak launch at the side of the dock can be used to launch kayaks or canoes, if they do not exceed the width of the launch.
A formal ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place in the near future, but the dock and kayak launch are open for use. For more information about the projects supported through HAAP, please visit www.tpwd.texas.gov/haap.
